Brake pads are a wear and tear item, and do need to be replaced at a wide range of mileage. If you ride in muddy, wet, or aggressive terrain such as steep hills, pads may need to be replaced as soon as every 200 miles. If you’re taking it easy on flat terrain, 700+ is achievable. Making sure your brakes are adjusted properly is the first step to ensuring the longest pad life possible. Also, different pad materials will have different wear characteristics.
